BALTIMORE, Md., Sept. 23, 2008 ? James Madison hit .295 as a team and broke away from a 1-1 tie to win sets three and four in picking up a 3-1 victory over Maryland-Baltimore County on Tuesday night at RAC Arena.
JMU (6-10) defeated UMBC (9-6) by set scores of 25-17, 10-25, 25-23, and 25-22.
Sophomore Lindsay Callahan (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) had one of her best statistical nights of the season with a double-double of 17 kills and 11 digs. She hit .375 with just two errors on 40 attempts.
Senior Michelle Johnson (Los Gatos, Calif./Los Gatos) had 14 kills with two errors on 22 swings for an efficient .545 percentage. Senior setter Lauren Miles (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) also had a double-double with 41 assists and 11 didgs. Sophomore Sofia Lindroth (Edwards, Colo./Battle Mountain) tallied 11 digs.
Alyssa Lang led UMBC with 14 kills and six digs along with three aces. Sarah Ball had a double-double with 11 kills on .318 hitting and 11 digs and Bridget Scheetz added 11 kills on .333 hitting and six blocks. Alexandria Spaay accumulated 41 assists, five digs, and five blocks.
In set one, JMU broke away from an 11-11 tie with a five-point run with sophomore Lauren Fanelli (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) at serve. The Dukes held that lead the rest of the way and finished the set 25-17.
Set two was dominated by the Retrievers. After JMU held a 3-2 lead, UMBC scored 10 of the next 11 points and 23 of 30 overall for the 25-10 win. The Dukes hit -.080 for the set compared to no lower than .314 in each of the other three sets.
JMU reversed the fortunes quickly in set three, building a 14-7 lead. The Retrievers charged back with a 9-3 run to pull within one point at 17-16. However, the Dukes stepped up with a 5-0 run
