GREENVILLE, N.C., Oct. 20, 2009 -- Junior Mary Chamberlain (Dennis, Mass./Suffield Academy) fired a 1-under-par 70, tying for the third-lowest score in school history, to lead the Dukes to a seventh-place finish at the Lady Pirate Invitational, held this week at the Greenville Country Club in Greenville, N.C.
Chamberlain tied for seventh in a field of 84 after carding a 77-73-70=220. The junior's 70 in the third round ties a mark set seven previous times and is two shy of the school record of 68 (three times). It was a career- and season-low round for the Massachusetts native, eclipsing her previous career-best, a 73 at the 2007-08 Sea Trail Intercollegiate, by three strokes. Her 54-hole score of 220 also tied for the fifth-best mark in program history.
It was the first top 10 of the season for Chamberlain and fourth of her career.
Junior Laura Mesa (Manizales, Colombia/Colegio Granadino) tied her season-best for an 18-hole round, firing a 73 in Tuesday's final round to climb into a tie for 24th. The Colombia native carded rounds of 78-75-73=226.
Sophomore Valentina Sanmiguel (Bogota, Colombia/Gimasio la Montaña) and junior Kelly Lynch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) tied for 36th. Sanmiguel carded a 79-73-79=231, while Lynch shot a 76-81-74=231. Junior Catrin Gunnarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden/Sanda Gymnasiet) finished 43rd after shooting a 79-77-76=232.
Sophomore Shannon Kramer (Brightwaters, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) saw her first action of the year. Participating as an individual in the event, Kramer finished tied for 80th after carding an 88-86-86=260.
Elon's Tara McFadden (73-66-72=218) tied for the lowest score in the nine-year history of the event (Katie Stepanek/Maryland/2005) to finish two strokes ahead of East Carolina's Abby Bools (70-71-72=213). Bools teammate Ana Maria Puche (73-71-70=214) finished third, followed by UTEP's Rosana Gomez (74-72-72=218) and Xavier's Mary Beth McKenna (72-74-72=218) in a tie for fourth.
Georgia State (293-293-293=879) placed four golfers in the top 18, including two in a tie for seventh to claim a two-shot victory over East Carolina (296-293-292=881) in the team competition. East Tennessee State (296-290-305=891) finished third, followed by Xavier (301-295-296=895) in fourth and Elon (302-298-295=895) in fifth.
The Dukes are off until Feb. 14-16 when they travel to Miami, Fla. for the Qdoba Invitational.
