HARRISONBURG, Va., Oct. 3, 2009 ? VCU hit .345 in the opening set, pulled out a back-and-forth rally in the second, and used an 8-0 comeback run in the third for a 3-0 sweep over James Madison in a Colonial Athletic Association volleyball match on Saturday evening in Sinclair Gymnasium.
VCU improved to 13-6 overall and 2-1 in the CAA after winning by set scores of 25-16, 29-27, and 25-21. JMU dropped to 6-13 overall and 0-4 in the league with its sixth straight setback.
“I thought that coming off such an emotional match last night, we started all the way from warm-ups through the beginning flat emotionally,” commented head coach Disa Garner. “Physically we were fine, but emotionally we were in a fog, and it took until the second set before we were playing well. We did some good things then, but unfortunately, we had a lot of errors. We had a lot of unforced errors attacking, blocking, serving, and receiving. We're doing a lot of good things but we have to reduce the errors if we want to pull out these matches.”
“I thought VCU was o.k. tonight, but what I'm encouraged with is that once we get these things fixed, we're going to win a lot of matches with this young group. I'm pleased that we're progressing, we just have to fix the errors. That's something that a young team just needs to learn.”
Freshman outside hitter Danielle Erb (Tampa, Fla./Plant) posted her sixth double-double of the second and second in as many nights with 10 kills and 11 digs for the Dukes. Sophomore Kelly Turner (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central) and junior Lindsay Callahan (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) added nine and eight kills, respectively.
Freshman Megan Wiechmann (Sunland, Calif./Village Christian) and junior >
