FAIRFAX, Va., Nov. 14, 2009 – George Mason hit .350 as a team, including .575 in the final two sets, along with 18 blocks to defeat James Madison 3-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association volleyball regular-season finale for both teams on Saturday night.
GMU improved to 21-8 overall and 10-4 in the CAA. The Patriots won by set scores of 23-25, 25-16, 25-11, and 25-13. JMU finished its season at 11-19 overall and 4-10 in the league.
Junior Lindsay Callahan (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) registered eight kills and seven digs for the Dukes. She became just the third player in JMU history to surpass 1,000 kills for her career as a junior, the ninth to reach the mark overall. She also climbed from sixth to fourth in career attack attempts with 2,993.
Sophomore Holly Wall (Kaukauna, Wisc./Kaukauna) posted 10 kills on .304 hitting with eight digs. Sophomore Kelly Turner (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central) shared team-high honors with 10 kills. Freshman Megan Wiechmann (Sunland, Calif./Village Christian) tallied 38 assists, seven digs, and three kills.
Rebecca Walter led George Mason with 12 kills on .522 hitting with eight digs and six blocks. Five other Patriots had at least eight kills. Holly Goode totaled nine kills, five digs, and nine blocks. Kelsey Bohman had eight kills on .583 hitting with nine blocks. Laura Turner accumulated eight kills, three aces, and nine blocks. Noelle Fanella posted eight kills and four digs. Fernanda Bartels added 40 assists and seven digs.
JMU hit .238 in the opening set and built a 14-9 lead on Mason. The Patriots responded with a 13-6 run to push ahead 22-20. Kills by Callahan and Wiechmann, as well as a block, put the Dukes back in front 24-22. After a service error, Turner's kill finished the set 25-23.
