HARRISONBURG, Va., March 11, 2009 ? Redshirt junior Matt Townsend (Lorton, Va./Hayfield) went 3-for-5 with a three-run home run to power James Madison past Youngstown State 11-7 on Wednesday afternoon at Long Field/Mauck Stadium.
JMU improved to 10-5 on the season and won for the 10th time in 12 games after finishing the brief two-game sweep of YSU, which fell to 2-9.
Townsend singled, doubled, and hit a three-run home run in the eighth to put the game out of reach while scoring all three times on base. Sophomore short stop David Herbek (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) and junior outfielder Matt Browning (Mystic, Conn./Fitch) each had two-run home runs. Redshirt junior outfielder Bryan Lescanec (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Freshman Evan Scott (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) earned his first collegiate victory after allowing four runs on five hits in seven innings with four strikeouts. Sophomore Kevin Munson (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) allowed one hit with two strikeouts in two innings for his second save.
Junior Eric Marzek took the loss for YSU after allowing six runs on five hits in two innings. Freshman Ryan Messmer allowed two runs in the third then stifled the Dukes for four innings before leaving with two runners on in the eighth, both of which scored on Townsend's homer.
Marzek and senior John Koehnlein each had two hits, a run, and an RBI. Junior Jacke Healey had the only extra-base hit of YSU's nine hits with a double and a walk while scoring twice and driving in two.
Townsend led off the game for the Dukes with a single up the middle and moved to second on Herbek's walk. A fielder's choice groundout pushed Townsend to second and he scored when sophomore third baseman McKinnon Langston's (Tallahassee, Fla./North Florida Christian) single bounced high in the air. Freshman catcher Jake Lowery (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) lined a sacrifice fly to centerfield for the second run.
