NEW MARKET, Va., March 15, 2009 ? James Madison took game one 9-4 before Bryant rallied late in game two for an 8-7 win as the teams split a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Rebel Park.

Bryant took two out of three in the weekend series to improve to 9-4 overall, The Bulldogs went 9-2 on their spring break trip south, including 6-2 against Virginia schools. JMU fell to 11-7 for the season.

In the opener, sophomore Turner Phelps (Roanoke, Va./Lord Botetourt) struck out nine batters in six innings to improve to 3-0 on the season and 11-0 in his career. He allowed four runs on eight hits. Sophomore Kevin Munson (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) pitched a scoreless seventh to finish it off.

Sophomore shortstop David Herbek (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) and junior outfielder Matt Browning (Mystic, Conn./Fitch) each had three singles in four at bats. Herbek scored twice while Browning scored once and drove in two. Redshirt junior outfielder Bryan Lescanec (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) hit a three-run homer, his second in two days.

John Michael Ryan took the loss for Bryant after allowing six runs on six hits in 2 2/3 innings. Pat McKenna was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three runs scored. Nick Campbell and Jeff Vigurs each had two hits, with Vigurs driving in a pair.

After hitting 10 doubles on Saturday, Bryant leadoff hitter McKenna doubled to right and moved to third on a wild pitch. He came around to score on a groundout by Stone. A hit batter and a walk put two runner on base in front of Vigurs' RBI double to left center.

After the Dukes left the bases loaded in the first, the Bulldogs loaded the bases with two out in the second and Vigurs again came through with an RBI single to left for a 3-0 Bryant lead. A fly out to right ended the threat.
