HARRISONBURG, Va., March 17, 2009 ? James Madison pounded 18 hits and a pair of freshmen pitchers held Liberty in check in a 13-2 win in a non-conference baseball game on Tuesday afternoon at Long Field/Mauck Stadium.
JMU improved to 12-7 overall and won its seventh straight game against Liberty, which fell to 10-5.
The Dukes had eight extra-base hits in the game and were led by the bottom half of the batting order, with the five through eight hitters going 11-for-18 with 11 RBIs.
Junior third baseman Kent Burford (Waynesboro, Va./Stuarts Draft), redshirt junior outfielder Bryan Lescanec (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle), and freshman catcher Jake Lowery (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) each went 3-for-5 at the plate. Burford doubled off the wall and hit his first JMU home run with three RBIs. Lescanec doubled and drove in four for the second time in four games. Lowery doubled, tripled, scored twice, and drove in two.
Junior outfielder Matt Browning (Mystic, Conn./Fitch), who on Monday was named CAA Player of the Week, had two doubles, two walks, two RBIs, and scored three times. Sophomore designated hitter McKinnon Langston (Tallahassee, Fla./North Florida Christian) was 2-for-3 with two runs and a walk.
Freshman Evan Scott (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) was victorious for his second straight start to improve to 2-2. He allowed six singles, struck out five and surrended just one run in six innings of work. Freshman Josh Futter (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) earned his first career save after giving up one run on two hits with two strikeouts in three innings.
Tyler Light took the loss for the Flames to drop to 1-1. He allowed four runs on five hits with three walks in three innings. Shortstop Matt Williams was the only Liberty player with multiple hits, going 2-for-5 and scoring once.
