RADFORD, Va., March 18, 2009 ? Freshman Paul DeVito pitched 7 1/3 innings to lead Radford to a 7-4 win over James Madison in a non-conference baseball game on Wednesday afternoon at the RU Baseball Park.

RU improved to 5-8 on the season while JMU dropped to 12-8. The Highlanders won the third straight meeting between the two teams.

DeVito improved to 2-0 in his career after limiting the Dukes to two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings. Jason Patten recorded the last two outs for his third save.

Jeff Kemp was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for Radford. Alex Gregory and Nick Minter were each 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI with Gregory hitting a double.

Junior David Edwards (Ocala, Fla./St. Cloud) allowed five runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings as the starter for JMU. Junior leftfielder Matt Browning (Mystic, Conn./Fitch) was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer, two runs, and a walk. Redshirt junior catcher Chris Johnson (Shrewsbury, N.J./Red Bank Regional) was 3-for-4.

After the Dukes went down in order in the first, Kemp reached on a two-out single in the bottom of the inning for Radford. Gregory then doubled off the wall in left center to score Gregory from first for a 1-0 Highlander lead. After a hit batter, Minter singled to right center to plate the second RU run. Minter then broke early for second, drawing a throw and sending Reggie Keen to home plate. Junior Mike Fabiaschi's (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) throw home to Johnson was in time for the out to end the inning.

JMU manufactured a run in the second inning as Browning reached on a single off the end of the bat to right. He stole second and moved to third one pitch later on a balk. Redshirt senior rightfielder Bryan Lescanec (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) hit a soft grounder to short to score Browning and cut the lead to 2-1.
