DUKES SWEEP DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST LAFAYETTE

HARRISONBURG, Va., Mar. 7, 2009 ? Senior right-hander Meredith Felts (Greenville, N.C./J.H. Rose) gave up just three hits in 11.1 innings to lead the James Madison softball team to a sweep of Lafayette College in non-conference softball action Saturday. Felts picked up both wins at the JMU Softball Complex to improve to 5-2 on the season.
JMU won game one 2-0 before coming from behind to win 4-3 in game two. The Dukes improved to 12-5 with the wins while the Leopards opened their season at 0-2.
In the day's second game, JMU scored three seventh inning runs to come from behind and beat Lafayette 4-3. Senior third baseman Amber Kirk (Hamilton, Va./Loudoun County) led off the inning with a double to left field. She advanced to third on a throwing error, before the Dukes loaded the bases on a pair of walks. Senior second baseman Kaitlyn Wernsing (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth) followed with a double to left-center scoring Kirk and senior pinch runner Megan Forbes (Fincastle, Va./Lord Botetourt). With the score tied, sophomore catcher Katie Spitzer (Broadway, Va./Broadway) walked to again load the bases before junior center fielder Brittney Dyson (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) drew the innings fourth walk to plate freshman shortstop Ashley Burnham (Danvers, Mass./Danvers).
Kirk went 2-for-4 with a run scored in game two.
Lafayette scored two unearned runs in the top of the fifth to take a 3-1 lead on Madison. Shortstop Christina Giambrone kicked things off with a one-out infield single. Pinch runner Amanda Parker moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a single by catcher Stacey Kushner. Lafayette starter Kasey Karr grounded out to third to move Kushner into scoring position. Designated player Kristin Garganio followed with a shot right back to Felts. Felts knocked the ball down and fired to first but a muffed catch allowed Parker and Kush
