WILMINGTON, N.C., April 26, 2009 ? A 3-for-3 day from senior catcher Julia Dominguez (Sterling, Va./Park View) and JMU's first save of the season led the Dukes to a 5-3 win over UNC Wilmington on Sunday.
The Dukes completed the three-game sweep over the Seahawks to improve to 29-14 overall and 9-8 in the Colonial Athletic Association while UNC Wilmington fell to 13-29 overall and 8-10 in the conference. Madison has won seven straight conference games to climb from seventh place to fourth in the CAA.
The Dukes took advantage of a UNCW error in the top of the first inning to take an early 1-0 inning. Junior right fielder Courtney Simons (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) started things off with a one-out double to left field before an error in left field on a line drive by senior third baseman Amber Kirk (Hamilton, Va./Loudoun County) extended the inning. Dominguez came up with two outs and runners on first and second and delivered and RBI double down the line to plate the game's first run.
The Seahawks battled back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three runs off JMU starter Meredith Felts (Greenville, N.C./J.H. Rose). Left fielder Ashley Shingleton jump-started the rally with a one-out double to right field and scored two batters later on a single by shortstop Rachel Sawyer. Third baseman Michelle Harrison plated Sawyer with a double to the gap in left center before scoring on a triple to right field by center fielder Kelsey Eddinger.
Felts got out of the inning without any more damage by striking out designated player Alison Lanouette to end the inning.
Dominguez added her second hit of the game in the top of the third inning to cut the Wilmington lead in half. Simons again started the rally, driving a single to left field and moving to second on an infield single by sophomore designated player Katie Spitzer (Broadway, Va./Broadway). Dominguez drove
