DUKES TAKE TWO FROM FLAMES

HARRISONBURG, Va., April 8, 2009 ? Taking advantage of seven Liberty errors to score five unearned runs the James Madison softball team swept a doubleheader over the Flames at the JMU Softball Complex on Wednesday. JMU took game one 4-1 before scoring a late run to win game two 2-1.
The Dukes ended their three-game losing streak and extended their non-conference winning streak to 10 games. They are now 22-11 on the season while Liberty fell to 14-23 overall.
Game two featured a pitchers' duel between Madison senior right-hander Meredith Felts (Greenville, N.C./J.H Rose) and LU starter Sarah Ellis. The duo traded scoreless frames through the first three and a half innings before the Dukes broke through with a single run in the fourth.
Sophomore designated player Katie Spitzer (Broadway, Va./Broadway) started a one-out rally in the inning, singling to left field. Senior pinch runner Megan Forbes (Fincastle, Va./Lord Botetourt) entered the game for Spitzer and immediately stole second. She scored during the ensuing at bat as senior outfielder Jenny Clohan (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) doubled to left field.
Clohan was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Forbes improved to 11-for-11 in stolen base attempts.
Liberty tied things up in the top of the fifth inning, on a lead-off home run by first baseman Beth Bennett. Shortstop Kelly Strickland doubled in the next at bat, but that would be all the offense LU would get in the game as Felts shut down the Flames through the final two innings.
