HARRISONBURG, Va., July 24, 2009 -- James Madison women's golfers Kelly Lynch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and Mary Chamberlain (Dennis, Mass./Suffield Academy) each staged dramatic victories to win their respective state amateur opens.
Lynch, a rising junior for the Dukes in 2009, came back from three down with four holes remaining to win the 88th Maryland Women's Amateur. The team MVP in 2008-09 won the final four holes in the match play event to beat out Elyse Smidinger to win the event at the Old South Country Club.
Lynch's deficit was actually as large as four holes after 11 but the Severna Park native won six of the last seven to take the title. Lynch cut the lead to two with a par on 15 before birdying the par-3 16th to cut the lead in half. Another birdie on 17 leveled the match before she sealed the match with a par on 18.
It was the second time in the event Lynch came from behind. In Tuesday's opening round Lynch trailed by three after nine holes to 2005 champ Emily Kwak before rallying to win.
The All-CAA second teamer added to her honors on Thursday by being named to the VaSID Academic All-State Team.
Chamberlain used 18 pars at the Vesper Country Club in Tyngsborough, Mass. to win the Women's Golf Association of Massachusetts Amateur Open. On the par-5 18th, the rising redshirt junior was faced with a 10-foot putt while holding onto a 1-up lead. Chamberlain drained the putt to secure the win over Tara Joy Connelly for her first State Amateur championships in three attempts.
Last year, Chamberlain won the 2008 New England Amateur championship.
The match was all square through 16 holes before a two-p
