ROCK HILL, S.C., Sept. 19, 2009 ? James Madison rallied from a set down to take the final two sets and beat Davidson 3-2 before then falling to host Winthrop 3-0 on the final day of the Wingate Inn Classic on Saturday in the Winthrop Coliseum.
JMU stands at 6-8 on the season after going 2-2 in the two-day tournament. The Dukes defeated Davidson by set scores of 23-25, 26-24, 15-25, 25-22, and 18-16 while also falling to host Winthrop 25-20, 25-18, and 25-13. Each of JMU's last three victories have been in five sets.
Four players had double-digit kills in the win over the Wildcats, led by sophomore Kelly Turner (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central) with her first career double-double. She had a team-high 15 kills, career-high .609 attack percentage, twice her career high with 10 digs, and four blocks.
Sophomore Holly Wall (Kaukauna, Wisc./Kaukauna) added her second double-double of the season with 14 kills and 12 digs. Junior Lindsay Callahan (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) solidified her All-Tournament performance with 13 kills, nine digs, and five blocks. Freshman Danielle Erb (Tampa, Fla./Plant) had 11 kills and eight digs while junior Lauren Fanelli (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) totaled 51 assists. Freshman Haley Jacobsen (Winchester, Va./Sherando) had five blocks with two solo alogn with three kills.
“It was a pretty gutsy performance,” head coach Disa Garner said of the Davidson match. We really played well today and had to do some manipulation of the lineup to make it work. Turner was the highlight of the match. She had a double-double and really did a good job. Holly Wall also had a big match with a double-double. Haley had the big blocking numbers for us and Cal also had some good numbers blocking. It was a good effort and very gutsy. It was a great match point-for-point the whole way through.”
