HARRISONBURG, Va., Sept. 5, 2009 ? Sophomore Kelly Turner (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central) posted 18 kills and freshman Danielle Erb (Tampa, Fla./Plant) added her second straight double-double as James Madison defeated Hampton 3-1 Saturday afternoon in the JMU Days Inn Invitational in Sinclair Gymnasium.

JMU improved to 2-3 with the win by set scores of 22-25, 25-18, 25-21, and 25-18. Hampton also fell to 2-3.

“We're excited that we got our next win,” stated 10^th-year head coach Disa Garner. “We certainly had to earn it, but as slow as we started off, we picked things up. In sets three and four, we showed the intensity that we need to bring and executed on the court. I was happy that we were able to do that with four freshmen on the court.”

Turner had a career-high 18 kills and hit .455 in the match with three errors on 33 attempts. She had at least five kills in three of the four sets. Erb tallied 14 kills while hitting .276 along with 16 digs. Junior Lindsay Callahan (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) posted her first double-double of the season with 10 kills, 11 digs, and seven blocks. Freshman Megan Wiechmann (Sunland, Calif./Village Christian) played her first complete match at setter with 49 assists while freshman Sara Dougherty (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) tallied 13 digs in her first career match.

“I thought Turner did a great job on the outside [usually at middle]. Having that flexibility is a great option for us. Sara did a nice job coming in and passing a lot of balls, digging up a lot of balls. It was nice to get her some playing time and see her play well on the court. I thought we had another solid performance by Dani Erb. She does a great job of bringing consistency to her game and that's really going to pay off for us down the road.”
