HARRISONBURG, Va., Sept. 4, 2009 - Junior forward CJ Sapong (Manassas, Va./Forest Park) scored two first-half goals to lead James Madison to a 3-0 win over Rider, while High Point defeated Richmond 2-1 in Friday night's opening round of the JMU/Comfort Inn Harrisonburg Men's Soccer Tournament.
Sapong's first strike came in the 19th minute. After receiving a feed from senior Billy Swetra (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Absegami), Sapong and freshman Paul Wyatt (Modbury, England/Ivybridge) exchanged a quick pair of passes that set Sapong up for an easy chip over the keeper from about 12 yards out.
Sapong's second goal of the first half was a lightning-quick backward header off a long throw-in from redshirt junior Patrick Stevens (Centreville, Va./Centreville) that Rider senior goalkeeper Dylan Hastings (Tabernacle, N.J./Rutgers) never had a chance to save.
The Dukes finished the scoring just 8:55 into the second half as junior Torey Beiro (McLean, Va./McLean) found Wyatt with a long cross from the right side that Wyatt was able to wrest from the keeper and poke into the net.
JMU outshot Rider 22-4, including a 10-1 advantage in the second half, forcing six saves out of Hastings and two more out of sophomore goalkeeper Christopher Pimentel (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial), a late substitute.
Junior goalkeeper Ken Manahan (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) was only forced to make two saves to preserve the shutout for the Dukes.
In the first game, High Point's Ojkiomah brothers teamed up for the game-winning score in the 54th minute. Sophomore Karo Okiomah (Austin, Texas/Hendrickson-Pflugerville) fed a ball past two defenders ahead to freshman Fejiro Okiomah (Austin, Texas Hendrickson-Pflugerville). He hit a shot from the right side of the box into the far corner of the goal.
High Point led 1-0 at halftime on a goal by Karo Okiomah in the 27th minute. Senior Matt Tuttle (Winston-Salem, N.C./Reynolds) lofted a ball across from the right side of the field into the box, where Okiomah was able to head the ball into the left side of the net.
Richmond evened the score early in the second period, as sophomore Ben Brewster (New Hampton, N.H./New Hampton School) headed a cross from sophomore Jayson Perez (Siler City, N.C./Jordan Matthews) into the goal just 1:58 into the half.
The tournament continues Sunday, Sept. 6, with High Point playing Rider at noon, followed by JMU vs. Richmond at 2:30 p.m.
