CHARLESTON, S.C., Feb. 19, 2010 - Freshman right-hander Heather Dindinger (Riner, Va./Auburn) became the first Duke to throw a shutout in her first career appearance as JMU split a pair of games to open up its season at the CofC Cougar Classic. The Dukes dropped a 4-3 extra-inning game against Akron to begin the day before shutting out Wagner 3-0 in game two at Patriots Point Stadium in Charleston, S.C.
The Dukes opened 1-1 on the season while Akron and Wagner went to 1-0 and 0-1, respectively.
Dindinger joined JMU alumna Meredith Felts (2006-09) as the only pitchers in program history to throw a complete-game shutout in their first career starts. Felts accomplished the feat in 2006 against Prairie View A&M in her second career appearance.
Dindinger limited the Seahawks to four hits and one walk while striking out two in seven innings.
Senior first baseman Shannon Moxey (Church Road, Va./Mills Godwin) led the offense going 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored and an RBI. Sophomore shortstop Ashley Burnham (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored.
The Dukes opened up a 2-0 lead on Seahawks starter Judy Betz in the bottom of the third inning. Burnham jump started the inning with a one-out triple into the right-center gap. She scored one batter later on a fielding error by Wagner second baseman Erin Cuevas. Moxey made it 2-0, with an RBI double that plated senior right fielder Courtney Simons (Richmond, Va./Deep Run).
Moxey added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it 3-0. The senior led off the inning with a double to left field and moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a sacrifice fly by senior left fielder Chel'sea Ryan (Sandston, Va./Henrico).
Dindinger took care of the rest for the Dukes as she retired the final six batters she faced and nine of the final 11 to preserve the shutout.
In addition to Dindinger, two other freshman made their JMU debuts against Wagner as Megan Shinaberry (Davie, Fla./McCarthy) started at catcher and >
