JACKSONVILLE, Fla., March 14, 2010 - Illinois State started the game with eight runs in the first inning and closed with 12 in the seventh to record a 29-8 seven-inning victory in the final game of the Kennel Club Classic on Sunday afternoon at North Florida's Harmon Stadium.
ISU improved to 6-8 on the season while JMU fell to 4-8. The 29 runs scored by the Redbirds were a JMU opponent record. The previous mark of 23 was reached three times, the last by UNC Wilmington in a 23-4 win in 2008.
Illinois State scored in five of seven innings, including eight in the first, two in the second, five in the fifth, two in the sixth, and 12 in the seventh.
Starter Ryan Camp earned the win for the Redbirds to improve to 2-2. He allowed five runs, four earned, on five hits in five innings.
The early damage came against JMU ace Turner Phelps (Roanoke, Va./Lord Botetourt), who allowed 10 runs on seven hits in just over one inning of work. He walked two, hit two batters, and allowed a wild pitch. Phelps dropped to 0-3 on the season and has lost five of his last six career decisions after previously holding a 15-0 career ledger.
Only seven of the 19 runs after Phelps were earned. Ten of the 12 runs posted by the Redbirds in the in the seventh were unearned against JMU senior David Edwards (Ocala, Fla./St. Cloud).
Third baseman Ryan Court and second baseman Kevin Tokarski each drove in seven runs for ISU. Court had two home runs, including a grand slam, and two doubles while going 4-for-6 with five runs scored. Tokarski also homered with three doubles while going 5-for-6 with four runs scored. First baseman Zach Amrein had a three-run home run and scored four times. Catcher Matt Mirabal went 4-for-4 with two RBIs.
Sophomore catcher/designated hitter Jake Lowery (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two walks to reach base in all four plate appearances for JMU. Redshirt junior first baseman Trevor Knight (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) was 2-for-3 with a solo home run. Redshirt senior right fielder Matt Townsend (Lorton, Va./Hayfield) also had a solo shot. Freshman center fielder Cole McInturff (Centreville, Va./Westfield) went 2-for-2.
JMU will make the 12-hour bus ride home to begin a stretch of seven home games over nine days at Veterans Memorial Park. The run will open with a 4 p.m. game on Tuesday against Liberty. The Dukes will then host #1 Virginia on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in a game expected to challenge the program's all-time attendance record.
