RICHMOND, Va., March 17, 2010 - James Madison men's tennis sophomore Tommi Nissinen (Oulu, Finland/Kastellin Lukio) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Singles Player of the Week on Wednesday for the week ending March 14.
Nissinen led the Dukes to a 4-1 record on their 10-day spring break trip by going 5-0 in singles play.
Among his five victories at No. 3 singles were a 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 victory over conference-rival Yakov Diskin of Old Dominion and a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Ernesto Ramos of Coastal Carolina. The win over Ramos helped JMU clinch a 4-3 win in Conway, S.C.
This season, Nissinen has amassed a 17-7 overall record in singles play. He is 10-4 in the spring, after going 7-3 during the fall tournaments. The Finland-native has only played one doubles match this spring, losing with freshman partner Greg Vladimirsky (Coral Springs, Fla./Broward Virtual) to the doubles team from Duquesne. Overall, he is 6-6 in doubles play this year.
William & Mary's Keziel Juneau and Anton Andersson were named as the CAA Doubles Team of the Week.Â
JMU takes on Liberty in Lynchburg, Va. at 2 p.m. on Thursday. Last season, Madison beat the Flames 4-3 in Harrisonburg.
