FAIRFAX, Va., March 27, 2010 - James Madison softball split a doubleheader to open Colonial Athletic Association play at George Mason on Saturday. The Dukes won game one at George Mason Field with a 5-0 shutout before dropping game two 6-5.
Madison ran its record to 13-17 overall and 1-1 in the CAA while GMU went to 8-10 and 1-1.
In game two, right-hander Amanda Buffington went the distance for Mason to improve to 2-1. She allowed five runs on 10 hits and a walk.
Freshman right-hander Heather Dindinger (Riner, Va./Auburn) picked up the loss after giving up two runs on two hits in 2 1/3 innings of relief. Junior Olivia McPherson (Liberty, N.C./Southern Alamance) started the game and gave up four runs on two hits in 3 2/3 innings. As a staff, JMU walked nine batters, leading to three Mason runs.
Left fielder Stephanie Strother led the GMU attack with a double, a run scored and an RBI. First baseman Emily Lafferty had a double, a run scored, an RBI and two walks.
Junior catcher Katie Spitzer (Broadway, Va./Broadway) went 3-for-3 with a home run to lead the Dukes. Senior first baseman Shannon Moxey (Church Road, Va./Mills Godwin) had two hits, a double and two RBI. Senior center fielder Brittney Dyson (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) chipped in with two hits, a run and an RBI.
Mason jumped out to a 2-0 in the first. Alyssa See started things off with a one-out walk and moved to third on a single by Rachael Davies. A ground-out by Kara Weiner chased home the Patriots first run, before Davies scored on a wild pitch.
Junior catcher Katie Spitzer's (Broadway, Va./Broadway) homer in the top of the second cut the lead to 2-1. It was the fifth home run of the year for Spitzer and the ninth of her career, moving her into a tie for seventh on JMU's all-time list.
The Patriots extended their lead to 3-1 in the fourth. They loaded the bases with two walks sandwiched around a double, before a fielder's choice at the plate got Madison a second out. Junior right-hander Heather Widner (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Re
