HARRISONBURG, Va., April 10, 2010 - Freshman pitcher Olivia Galati struck out 19 batters in 8 2/3 innings pitched to lead Hofstra to a doubleheader sweep over James Madison in Colonial Athletic Association softball action at Veterans Memorial Park on Saturday. HU won game one 6-0 before holding off a late rally for a 6-3 win in the nightcap.
The Pride remains the only unbeaten team in CAA play improving to 8-0 in the conference and 26-6 overall. The Dukes have lost four straight to fall to 16-23 and 4-4 in the CAA.
Erin Wade picked up the win in game two to improve to 9-4. She gave up three runs on six hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings pitched. Galati escaped a bases loaded jam in the sixth to earn her second save of the year.
Freshman right-hander Heather Dindinger (Riner, Va./Auburn) took the loss to drop to 3-9. She gave up four runs, one earned, on three hits and two walks. Junior reliever Olivia McPherson (Liberty, N.C./Southern Alamance) allowed two runs on four hits in three innings. Junior right-hander Heather Widner (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Ready) struck out the only batter she faced in 1/3 inning of relief.
Shortstop Trisha Dreslinski led the Pride offense, going 2-for-2 with a run and two RBI. Galati and pinch hitter Christie Novatin each hit a home run, while right fielder Tessa Ziemba went 2-for-3 with a double and a run.
Sophomore second baseman Caitlen Manning (Prince George, Va./Prince George) paced JMU with two hits, two RBIs and a walk. Senior first baseman Shannon Moxey (Church Road, Va./Mills Godwin) doubled and scored a run.
HU struck first getting a solo home run from Galati to lead off the second. The freshman battled Dindinger for six pitches before launching the seventh offering out to left center.
A key error in the fourth led to three unearned runs for the Pride. Ziemba led off with a hit by pitch. After a failed sacrifice bunt, third baseman Sara Michalowski grounded to Manning at second but the sophomore's throw got away from sophomore shortstop Ashley Burnham (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) putting two runners on with one out. A strikeout and another walk loaded the bases before catcher Courtney Crews beat out an infield single for a 2-0 lead. Dreslinski followed with a soft fly ball
