HARRISONBURG, Va., May 7, 2010 -- Two nationally-ranked women's lacrosse teams will meet in Saturday's Colonial Athletic Association title game when seventh-ranked James Madison faces No. 16 Hofstra in a 5 p.m. contest at the JMU Lacrosse Complex.
The top-seeded Dukes advanced to the championship game with a 7-4 semifinal win over fourth-seeded William and Mary Thursday night. Hofstra, the tournament's number three seed, nipped No. 2 seed and defending tournament champion Towson 9-8 in Thursday's other semifinal.
An NCAA Tournament berth is on the line as well Saturday. The CAA is one of six leagues that receives an automatic bid to the 16-team NCAA Championships. The NCAA field will be announced Sunday night, May 9, and first-round games will be played May 15 or 16.
The Dukes, winners of their last eight games, bring a 15-2 record into the championship match. Hofstra has a 12-5 record , with all five of its losses coming to Top 20 teams. One of those defeats was a 14-8 loss to JMU on April 18 in Harrisonburg.
JMU leads the all-time series with Hofstra 8-4, but the Pride has won three of the last five meetings. JMU and Hofstra have met twice in the CAA championship game, with the home team winning each time. In 2006 JMU won 14-8 in Harrisonburg, and in 2007 Hofstra won 15-13 in Hempstead, N.Y.
The Dukes will be making their 10th CAA championship game appearance but are in the title game for the first time since losing at Hofstra in 2007. JMU won CAA titles in 1997, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2006 and were runners-up in 1998, 2000 and 2007.
Hofstra, which joined the CAA in 2001-02, will play in its fourth CAA final. The Pride won the championship in 2007 and was runner-up in 2005 and 2006.
CAA Tournament Tickets: Tickets for the CAA Tournament may be purchased at the gate on game day. Per-day prices are $5 for adults and $3 for youth (17 and under), senior citizens and JMU faculty and staff. Students from the four participating institutions will be admitted free with a valid student ID card.
