LYNCHBURG, Va., Sept. 14, 2010 - Liberty outhit James Madison .171 to .088 as the Flames beat the Dukes 3-1 in non-conference volleyball action at the Vines Center in Lynchburg, Va. on Tuesday.
Liberty won by set scores of 25-16, 25-15, 13-25 and 25-18 to improve to 7-3. JMU had its winning streak snapped at four games to drop to 7-3.
The Dukes were led by senior Lindsay Callahan (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) with a match-high 18 kills on .311 hitting. Callahan added 10 digs to record her 27th career double-double. Redshirt sophomore Natalie Abel (Washington, Pa./Trinity) chipped in a team-high 21 digs and seven kills. Senior Jessica Zeroual (Ottawa, Ont./De La Salle) had three kills and three blocks while sophomore Megan Wiechmann (Sunland, Calif./Village Christian) led the team with 32 assists.
Rebecca Warren had a double-double with 11 kills and 19 digs to lead the Flames. Courtney Boggs and Lauren Bosche chipped in with 10 and nine kills, respectively. Bosche led all players with five blocks while Boggs had four. Hannah Anderson had a match-high 30 digs and Kaylee Groeneveld had 33 assists and three block assists.
Liberty out blocked Madison 6.5 to four and held a 75 to 64. Each team had five service aces but the Dukes committed 10 service errors to the Flames' six.
The first start got off to a good start for JMU, as the Dukes ran out to an early 6-3 lead. Liberty responded with a 4-0 run to take a 7-6 lead. The teams traded points until a 7-1 Flame run opened up an 18-12 lead. Madison didn't get closer than four the remainder of the set, losing 25-16.
The Dukes got off to another good start in set two taking a 8-5 lead on the strength of a 4-0 run with sophomore Danielle Erb (Tampa, Fla./Plant) on the serve. The Flames responded with a 14-0 run with Karyl Bacon serving. The run was too much for the Dukes to overcome, as Liberty closed the set 25-15.
In set three, JMU took advantage of its good start, using two separate runs of 4-0 to open up a 13-5 lead. The Dukes never let LU back into the set, closing it out with an 8-5 run to win 25-13.
The teams traded runs in the final set, keeping things close for the first 35 points. With the Flames clinging to an 18-17 lead, Liberty used a 7-1 run to close out the set and the match.
