CHATTANOOGA, Tenn., Sept. 17, 2010 - Three different James Madison players had double-doubles to lead JMU to a 3-1 win over Central Florida at Maclellan Gymnasium in the opening game of the Country Inn & Suites Invitational in Chattanooga, Tenn. on Friday.
The Dukes won by set scores of 25-23, 25-22, 17-25 and 25-21 to win for the fifth time in its last six matches and improve to 8-3 on the season. UCF lost its third straight to fall to 7-3.
Sophomore Danielle Erb (Tampa, Fla./Plant) had a match-high 16 kills and 12 digs to record her fourth double-double of the season and the 13th of her career. Senior Lindsay Callahan (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) recorded her third double-double in the last four matches and fourth overall as she finished with 15 kills and 16 digs. Redshirt sophomore Natalie Abel (Washington, Pa./Trinity) picked up her second career double-double with 10 kills and a match-high 20 digs. Senior Jessica Zeroual (Ottawa, Ont./De La Salle) led the team with five blocks while sophomore Megan Wiechmann (Sunland, Calif./Village Christian) led all players with 50 assists.
Kristin Fisher led the Knights with 16 kills, 13 digs, five blocks and two service aces. Three other players had nine kills each, including Evija Vilde, Nichole Riedel and Brittanie Wallace. Dani Harrison and Meredith Murphy had 12 digs each and Rachel Vukson had a team-high 26 assists.
JMU outhit UCF .211 to .200 and held a 75 to 68 advantage in digs. The Knights held a 10.5 to seven advantage in blocks.
Madison battled to a pair of tight wins in the first two sets, winning 25-23 and 25-22. After the break, UCF came out on first and ran way with a 25-17 victory before the Dukes rebounded to take the final set 25-21.
JMU returns to action on Saturday at 9 a.m. as they take on Belmont before wrapping up the tournament at 2 p.m. against tournament-host Chattanooga.
