HARRISONBURG, Va., Sept. 21, 2010 - Five different Dukes had at least five kills to lead James Madison to a 3-0 win over Radford at Sinclair Gymnasium/Godwin Hall in non-conference volleyball action on Tuesday.
The Dukes won by set scores of 25-14, 25-22, 25-15 to improve to 11-3 overall. JMU is 7-0 in matches played at home winning each match by a combined score of 21-1. Madison has already matched its win total from 2009 after finishing 11-19. Radford lost for the third time in its last four matches to drop to 6-8.
"I was really proud of (my team)," said head coach Lauren Steinbrecher. "They came out really strong and on fire. The second game we had a little bit of a lull, but we fought back which is nice to mental toughness there in that aspect."
Senior Lindsay Callahan (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) led the Dukes with a match-high 13 kills. She moved into fifth place on JMU's career kills list with 1,168, passing Karla Gessler (1997-00) on the all-time list. Callahan also had eight digs and four blocks to finish with 15 points.
Junior Kelly Turner (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central) added 10 kills on .353 hitting while sophomore Danielle Erb (Tampa, Fla./Plant) finished with seven kills. Senior Jessica Zeroual (Ottawa, Ont./De La Salle) and redshirt sophomore Natalie Abel (Washington, Pa./Trinity) had six and five kills respectively. Abel led the Dukes with 10 digs while sophomore Megan Wiechmann (Sunland, Calif./Village Christian) had a match-high 19 assists.
JMU outhit Radford .274 to .000 and held a 10-4 advantage in blocks. The 10 blocks was a season-high for the Dukes with Zeroual matching her season-high with six blocks. Abel had four blocks, including two solos and Wiechmann chipped in two block assists.
Carly Fleming and Megan McWhorter led the Highlanders with seven kills each. Storm Melnick led all players with 12 digs Desiree Aramburu had 13 assists. Fleming's had three blocks, including one solo.
