Women's Golf Finishes Ninth at Lady Paladin Invitational

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The James Madison women's golf team couldn't find the consistency in its final round and finished ninth at the 2011 Lady Paladin Invitational, Oct. 28-30. The three-day, 54-hole tournament was played at the Furman University Golf Course (Par 72 - 6,160 yards) in Greenville, S.C.

Battling the third-straight day of challenging temperatures and wind, the Dukes shot 41-over 329 in the final round and finished the tournament at 108-over 972 in ninth. South Florida shot the best round of the tournament, a 14-over 302, to come from behind to take the team title by one shot over second-round leader East Tennessee State, with the Bulls finishing at 69-over 933. Georgia State was third at 80-over 944, with Nova Southeastern at 82-over 946 in fourth and Augusta State and Samford tied for fifth at 86-over 950.

JMU was paced in the tournament by senior Nicole Sakamoto, who had the team-best round in all three rounds, including a 4-over 76 in the last 18, the only Duke under 80 in the round. Sakamoto finished at 13-over 229 in a tie for third, her second top-five and third top-15 finish in four fall events. Sophomore Ginger Mak was next for Madison in a tie for 34th at 27-over 243 after a final-round 9-over 81.Freshman Shabril Brewer shot a 30-over 246 and tied for 41st, with fellow freshman Maria Andrea Legaspi tied for 59th at 40-over 256. Freshman Nikola Wessels rounded out JMU's team effort in a tie for 74th at 50-over 266, tying for 74th. As an individual, freshman Katrina Aducci placed 81st at 75-over 291. Georgia State's Charlotte Lorentzen won the medalist race by five shots, shooting a 6-over 222, with South Florida's Christina Miller finishing as runner-up at 11-over 227.

The Dukes have wrapped up their fall schedule and will next be on the course, Mon.-Tue., Mar. 5-6, 2012 at the Hurricane Invitational in Miami, Fla.
