HARRISONBURG, Va., Feb. 26, 2011 - Scoring a combined 23 runs in the last three innings of each game of the doubleheader, the James Madison baseball team swept both ends of a doubleheader over visiting LeMoyne, 14-7 and 16-8, Feb. 26. The Dukes moved to 6-1 on the season while the Dolphins dropped to 1-5.
In game one, senior center fielder Alex Foltz (Mathias, W.Va./East Hardy) and junior designated hitter Jake Lowery (Midlothian, Va./Crosby) combined for seven hits, including three home runs, to lead JMU to a 14-7 win over Le Moyne.
Sophomore pitcher D.J. Brown (Locust Grove, Va./Orange County) earned the win to improve to 2-0. He allowed seven runs, five earned, on nine hits and four walks. The right-hander struck out five in 5 2/3 innings of work.
Cory Nelson took the loss for the Dolphins after giving up seven runs, six earned, on seven hits and three walks in 3 1/3 innings. The lefty struck out five.
Foltz finished the game 4-for-4 with two home runs, five RBIs and three runs scored while Lowery added a 3-for-3 day with a home run, three runs, two walks and four RBIs. Sophomore catcher Billy Logan (Greenup, Ky./Greenup County) chipped in with three hits, three runs and a RBI.
Le Moyne was led by center fielder Brett Botsford's 2-for-4 day with a double,a run and a RBI. Right fielder Matthew Ciraco had two hits and two runs while first baseman Kody O'Connor singled twice and drove in two.
Foltz got the ball rolling for the Dukes in the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run to left field on the third pitch of the frame. It was his third home run of the season and second lead-off shot of the season. Two batters later, Lowery singled to left field. He moved to second when senior shortstop David Herbek (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced a base on a double steal and a throwing error by the Le Moyne catcher allowed Lowery to score for a 2-0 led.
JMU put together a two-out rally to add to its lead in the bottom of the second. Junior right fielder Ian Haynes (Danville, Va./Tunstall) singled to right-center before advancing to third on a pair of stolen bases. Foltz picked up his second RBI of the game with a single off the first base bag.
Le Moyne grabbed a run back in the top of the third inning. Ciraco led off the frame with single to left field. A double off the fence in left field by Botsford scored Ciraco all the way from first.
The Dolphins took advantage of a error by third baseman Bradley Shaban (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the fourth. Le Moyne loaded the bases on singles by designated hitter Brendan Maghini, center fielder Vincent Redmond and Ciraco. Brown walked left fielder Zack Wiley to bring in the first run before shortstop Matt Marra drilled a sharp ground ball off the glove of Shaban for two unearned runs.
