HARRISONBURG, Va., Feb. 27, 2011 – Five pitchers combined to limit Le Moyne to one run on five hits as the James Madison baseball team clinched the weekend series over the Dolphins with a 4-1 win at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park on Sunday.
JMU won the series 3-1 to improve to 7-1 on the season. Le Moyne dropped to 1-6.
Freshman right-hander Jarred Tate (Bluff City, Tenn./Virginia H.S.) earned his first collegiate win after two innings of no-hit relief. He allowed one walk and struck out one. Freshman lefty Luke Munson (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) drew the start, the first of his career, and allowed two hits and two walks in two innings pitched. Freshman Tyler Thornton (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) and junior Scott Mayer (Waterford, Va./Loudoun Valley) each added two innings of shutout relief.
Left-hander Mark Kuzma took the loss for the Dolphins to drop to 0-1. He allowed four runs, two earned, on five hits and seven walks. He struck out three in 7 2/3 innings of work.
Senior center fielder Alex Foltz (Mathias, W.Va./East Hardy) went 1-for-3 with a walk and three RBIs to lead the Dukes. Freshman designated hitter Tyler McFarland (Bridgewather, Va./Turner Ashby) added two hits, a run and a RBI while sophomore first baseman Matt Tenaglia (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) doubled, walked and scored a run.
Le Moyne was led by third baseman Ryan Mahoney's 2-for-4 day with a home run. Catcher Kyle Kalaka added a double in three at-bats.
The Dukes struck for two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Tenaglia led off the frame with a hit-by-pitch. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and third on a single to right field by sophomore third baseman Bradley Shaban (Midlothian, Va./Cosby). McFarland followed with a double down the right-field line to make it 1-0. Foltz capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Shaban.
Foltz added two more RBIs to his day with a double in the bottom of the eighth. The Dukes did all their damage with two outs in the inning. McFarland got things going with a single through the left side. Right fielder Ian Haynes (Danville, Va./Tunstall) then hit a sharp grounder down the third base line. Mahoney made a diving stop on the play, but his throw to second was low and allowed everyone to reach safely. After a pitching change, Foltz turned on a 1-2 pitch and drove it into the gap in left center to score both runners.
Mahoney broke up the shutout for Madison with a solo home run to lead off the ninth inning.
