GREEN BAY, Wisc., August 27, 2011 – Senior outside hitter Holly Wall (Kaukauna, Wisc./Kaukauna) had a team-high 13 kills in her home state, but the James Madison volleyball team came up short in a 3-0 loss to No. 19 Dayton on day two of the Country Inn and Suites Volleyball Classic on Saturday.Â
Dayton won by set scores of 25-20, 25-18 and 25-16 to improve to 2-0 on the season. JMU dropped to 0-2 with one match remaining in the weekend.Â
Wall had 13 kills against just four errors for a .273 hitting percentage. She also contributed eight digs and a solo block in her homecoming. Senior middle blocker Kelly Turner (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central) and redshirt junior outside hitter Natalie Abel (Washington, Pa./Trinity) chipped in with four kills each with Abel also collecting a team-high 10 digs. Junior setter Megan Wiechmann (Sunland, Calif./Village Christian) led the team with 13 assists and sophomore middle blocker Kelly Maguire (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) had a match-high four blocks.Â
Megan Campbell collected a career-high 16 kills to lead the Flyers. She had just one error on 19 attempts to finish with a .789 attack percentage. Yvonne Marten and Rachel Krabacher had 13 kills apiece while Samantha Selsky led all players with 39 assists and 13 digs.Â
Dayton outhit JMU .376 to .188 and held a 47 to 39 advantage in digs. The Dukes collected six blocks to the Flyers three and also held a narrow 3-2 advantage in service aces.Â
UD jumped all over Madison in the opening set, running out to a 9-1 lead early. The lead hovered around eight points until the Dukes ran off four consecutive points to cut the advantage to 16-11. JMU would get as close as four points at 23-19, but couldn't overcome the slow start and dropped the opening set 25-20.Â
Again a slow start handcuffed JMU in set two, as Dayton ran out to leads of 5-1 and 10-3. Madison battled back to even the set at 14-14 before another Flyer run, this time 8-1, opened up a 22-15 lead and put the set out of reach.Â
In the third set it was the Dukes' turn to grab the early lead, jumping ahead 10-7. Dayton fought back to even the set at 14 apiece and closed the match on an 11-2 run for the sweep.Â
JMU is back in action this evening at the Kress Events Center as it takes on North Dakota at 5:30 p.m. in the final match of the Country Inn and Suites Volleyball Classic.>
