HIGH POINT, N.C., Sept. 10, 2011 - The James Madison volleyball team extended its win streak to six games Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 victory against Davidson in the High Point Classic at the Millis Center.
The Dukes won by scores of 25-20, 23-25, 25-21 and 25-16. JMU improved to 6-2 on the season, while the Wildcats dropped to 6-3 on the year.
Redshirt junior Natalie Abel (Washington, Pa./Trinity) tallied a team-high 11 kills and added a career-high 30 digs, while senior Holly Wall (Kaukauna, Wisc./Kaukauna) had 10 kills and three blocks.
JMU jumped out to a 13-8 lead in the first set forcing Davidson to call a timeout. JMU never held a lead less than four points the rest of the set to take it 25-20 and grab the 1-0 match lead.
The second set swung the Wildcats way as they never trailed. Down 16-10 to Davidson, JMU scored eight of the next 12 points to pull within two at 20-18. Teams traded points and JMU cut Davidson's lead to a single point on a few occasions, but with a 24-23 lead, Davidson's Madison Benedict and Christine Perzinksi blocked an attack attempt by junior Danielle Erb (Tampa, Fla./Plant) to tie the match at 1-1.
The Wildcats opened the third set with a 12-9 lead and JMU called a timeout. Following the break, the Dukes responded with a 10-2 run to hold a 19-14 advantage. Davidson got to within two points, but Madison was able to finish out the set with a 25-21 win to regain the match lead at 2-1.
In the fourth set, JMU scored 10 of the first 15 points to force Davidson into a timeout. Madison never allowed the Wildcats to get within four points the rest of the way and JMU cruised 25-16 in the set to take the match.
The Dukes return to action at 7 p.m. tonight when they face the host High Point in the final match of the High Point Classic.
