HARRISONBURG, Va., Sept. 17, 2011 – After winning eight straight games at home, the James Madison volleyball team dropped a pair of games on day two of the JMU Coca-Cola Classic at Godwin Hall/Sinclair Gymnasium on Saturday. JMU dropped its first game of the day 3-2 to Georgetown before falling 3-0 to Appalachian State in the nightcap.
The Dukes lost to the Hoyas by set scores of 21-25, 22-25, 26-24, 25-21, 15-10 and to the Mountaineers by scores of 28-26, 25-20, 25-21. The losses stopped JMU's overall winning streak at eight games and dropped them to 8-4 on the season. Georgetown went 3-0 in the Classic to claim the championship and improved to 8-5 while ASU went 2-1 to up its record to 7-6.
"We brought in three really good teams this weekend and we knew we were going to face a lot of tough competition," head coach Lauren Steinbrecher said. "I give it to Georgetown and App. State. They came out and they played great volleyball, put up a fight and pulled out the wins in the end."
Sophomore outside hitter Danielle Erb (Tampa, Fla./Plant) earned All-Tournament honors for the Dukes and was joined by ASU's Maggie Seeds and Kasey Sauls, East Tennessee State's Jamie Rutledge and Georgetown's Brooke Bachesta, Tory Rezin and Dani White. White was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
Against the Mountaineers, JMU got 12 digs each from senior outside hitter Holly Wall (Kaukauna, Wisc./Kaukauna) and sophomore libero Katie Daorai (Tampa, Fla./Plant) while Wall added six kills and a block. Erb had nine kills on a team-best .240 hitting. She also had eight digs, four service aces and a block. Sophomore middle blocker Kelly Maguire (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) had a match-high five blocks and junior setter Megan Wiechmann (Sunland, Calif./Village Christian) chipped in 28 assists and seven digs.
ASU was led by Anna Wagner with 14 kills and eight digs and Seeds with 12 kills, three digs and three blocks. Sauls had a double-double with 28 assists and 12 digs. Alison Blasingarne had a team-high five blocks while adding six kills and a pair of service aces.
Appalachian State out hit Madison .233 to .105. It also collected eight blocks to JMU's seven and won the dig battle 64 to 55.
