HARRISONBURG, Va. - Led by sophomore Kelly Maguire's (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) match-high 11 kills, the James Madison women's volleyball team got Colonial Athletic Association play off on the right foot with a 3-0 victory over visiting William & Mary, Sept. 23. With the win, the Dukes advanced to 10-4 and 1-0 in the CAA, while the Tribe fell to 5-7 and 0-1 in league play.
JMU controlled the match with effective attacks and defense, posting a .290 (42-13-100) hitting percentage while limiting William & Mary to just .071 (26-19-98) for the three sets. Madison had six aces to just three for the Tribe, while holding a slight edge in digs at 43-41. Both teams had six blocks on the night.
After the teams split the first four points of the opening set, Madison took control with a 6-1 run to move out to an 8-3 lead, keyed by a kill and a pair of service aces from junior Danielle Erb (Tampa, Fla./Plant). The Dukes continued to build the lead throughout the set, including a late 9-4 push to go up 22-9 before eventually finishing the set at 25-13 on freshman Lizzy Briones' (Siloam Springs, Ark/Siloam Springs) kill. Madison hit a stellar .455 in the opening frame, while holding the Tribe to -.036.
William & Mary scored the first point of the second set on a kill by Shaylin O'Connell, but the Dukes reeled off eight of the next 10 points to grab an 8-3 advantage. The visitors battled back to cut the lead at 9-8 before Maguire ended the run with a kill and sparked a 6-0 run to move JMU ahead 15-8. The Tribe could get no closer than four the rest of the set, with Madison eventually posting a 25-17 victory to go into the break up 2-0. Again, effective hitting was the story, with the Dukes outhitting the Tribe, .265 to .138.
The Tribe came out determined to extend the match in the third set, getting an early lead and forcing four ties. However, Holly Wall's kill at 5-5 gave JMU a lead it would not relinquish in the final set, as Maguire followed with back-to-back kills to make it 8-5. Again, William & Mary cut into the lead and closed to within a single point at 9-8, but a 4-0 surge pushed the lead out to 13-8. The Tribe got within two at 14-12 and within three on two other occasions, but the Dukes finished the match as a kill by senior Kelly Turner (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central) ended the third at 25-20 and gave the hosts the three-set sweep.
Maguire hit .318 (11-4-22) for the night for Madison, while Erb had eight kills, hit .318 (8-1-22) and added 10 digs.
