BLACKSBURG, Va., March 28, 2012 – Pitchers Jasmin Harrell and Bailey Liddle combined to throw 14 shutout innings as Virginia Tech swept a non-conference doubleheader over James Madison at the Tech Softball Park in Blacksburg, Va., on Wednesday. VT won game one 3-0 and took the nightcap 1-0.
The Dukes dropped to 12-20 on the season with the losses while the Hokies improved to 24-12.
In game two, Liddle limited the Dukes to three hits as she improved to 8-3 on the season. She did not walk a batter and struck out two in seven innings of work.
Freshman pitcher Sarah Mooney (Huntersville, N.C./North Mecklenburg) took the loss to drop to 4-8. She allowed just one run on three hits and three walks while striking out three in six innings of work. It was the rookie's fifth complete-game effort of the season.
Offensively, Virginia Tech was led by designated player Dani Anderson who went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. Right fielder Kristen Froehlich added a hit in two at-bats while second baseman Kylie McGoldrick went 1-for-2 with a walk.
Freshman left fielder Morgan Heath (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) extended her hitting streak to a career-best eight games with a single in three trips to the plate. Sophomore third baseman Caitlin Sandy (Fayetteville, N.C./Jack Britt) doubled in two at-bats while junior first baseman Haley Johnson (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) added a 1-for-3 day.
A two-out Hokie rally in the bottom of the fourth inning supplied the game's only run. Anderson drew a two-out walk and moved to third on a single down the right-field line by Froehlich. With pinch hitter Logan Spaw standing at the plate, Mooney's first offering got away from sophomore catcher Catherine Clavin (Poquoson, Va./Poquoson) for a wild pitch that allowed Anderson to score from third.
The Dukes put the tying runner on base in the fifth and seventh inning, but could not find the tying hit as Liddle worked her way out of any trouble each time.
In game one, VT scored three unearned runs in the second inning and Harrell limited the Dukes to three hits to earn the 3-0 victory.
