Softball Completes Sweep Over UNCW, 8-0

HARRISONBURG, Va., April 1, 2012 – Three different players collected multiple-hit games and freshman right-hander Heather Kiefer (Potomac Falls, Va./Potomac Falls) twirled a shutout to lead the James Madison softball team to an 8-0, six-inning Colonial Athletic Association win over UNCW on Sunday at Veterans Memorial Park.
JMU completed the series sweep to improve to 5-1 in CAA play and 15-20 overall. UNCW dropped its fifth straight, falling to 6-29 overall and 1-5 in the league.
Kiefer improved to 5-3 on the season while tossing her third shutout and seventh complete game of the year. The rookie limited the Seahawks to three hits and a walk while striking out four.
Amanda Davenport took the loss for UNCW, dropping to 5-14 on the year. She allowed eight runs, seven earned, on nine hits. The senior walked six and struck out one in 5 1/3 innings pitched.
Senior shortstop Ashley Burnham (Danvers, Mass./Danvers), junior first baseman Haley Johnson (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) and freshman left fielder Morgan Heath (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) each collected two hits to pace the Dukes' offense. Heath went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and a RBI. Burnham added two runs and a RBI, to tie the school records for career RBIs and total bases. Sophomore third baseman Caitlin Sandy (Fayetteville, N.C./Jack Britt) chipped in a double, a walk, a run and two RBIs.
Second baseman Daniela Torres went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles to lead UNCW. Shortstop Lauryn Buckworth added a single in three at-bats while designated player Stacey Pinno walked in two plate appearances.
JMU jumped out to a quick lead in the bottom of the first with a five-run inning. Junior center fielder Jasmine Butler (Winter Garden, Fla./West Orange) led off with a walk and moved to second on a stolen base. She scored on a double to left field by Heath. Burnham tied the school RBI record with a single up the middle, driving in Heath. The senior moved up to second on her ninth stolen base of the season. Back-to-back walks by the Dukes fourth and fifth hitters loaded up the bases before Sandy ripped a two-run double down the left-field line. Junior catcher Megan Shinaberry (Davie, Fla./McCarthy) capped the frame with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring freshman designated player Sarah Mooney (Huntersville, N.C./North Mecklenburg) from third.
