CHARLESTON, S.C., Oct. 30, 2013 - A goal in the 82nd minute made the difference as James Madison fell 2-1 at the College of Charleston in a Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer match Wednesday night.
The Cougars (3-10-1, 1-5-0 CAA) took a 1-0 lead in the first half with a goal by Xavier Rajpaul in the 33rd minute. Erik Clark and Tanner Clay assisted on the score, which was finished by Rajpaul with a diving header that went off the crossbar and into the net.
The Dukes (6-8-1, 1-5-0 CAA) tied the game thanks to a goal by senior Adam Bastidas (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua) in the 57th minute. Bastidas's second goal of the season came following a corner kick that was partially cleared before he was able to finish with a volley.
College of Charleston's Adam Noel scored the game-winner in a game that was a must-win for both teams' hopes of qualifying for the conference tournament. It was his second goal of the season.
Bastidas is wrapping up a solid career with the Dukes. The goal was his second of the season and gives him nine points, good enough for second on the team.
JMU goalie Colin Newcity (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) made five saves but suffered his first loss of the season, dropping to 1-2. CofC goalie Kees Heemskerk stopped six shots and picked up the win.
The Dukes will celebrate Senior Day when they host Georgia Southern for their final home game of the season Sunday.
