The Dukes fell to 8-4 on the season, snapping a two-game win streak, and 1-2 against Colonial Athletic Association foes. Today marked the Dukes' sixth trip to overtime (3-3) in 2014. The Tribe improved to 5-8 on the year and 2-1 in the CAA.
Senior goalkeeper Hannah George (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) tallied the loss (5-3) after allowing four goals and committing eight saves. Meredith Savage took the win after three goals allowed and five saves.
JMU tied the game at 3-3 with 45 seconds to play in regulation off a corner goal by junior back Loes Stijntjes (Steenokkerzeel, Belgium/Heilig Hartcollege), set up by junior back Adrienne le Vatte (Port Elizabeth, South Africa/Alexander Road) and senior back Dana Allaband (Elkton, Md./Rising Sun). While the Tribe executed two corners with no time remaining in regulation, the Dukes held off four shots to send the game into extra time.
Overall, William and Mary posted 22 shots to JMU's 13 shots, including a 16-11 advantage in shots-on-goal. The Tribe just edged the Dukes in penalty corners 10-8 on Sunday.
William and Mary scored back-to-back goals over a 2:08 span in the second half (41:24 mark, 43:32) to take its first lead of the game at 2-1 after JMU held a 1-0 lead for 15:28. A hard shot by freshman forward Melanie Kusakavitch (Pittston, Pa./Holy Redeemer) from the stick of fellow freshman forward Hannah Hall (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) put the Dukes on the board (1-0) 25:56 into the game.Â
The second tie of the day (2-2) came in the 60th minute of action as Stijntjes took the pass from redshirt-junior midfielder Taylor West (Princess Anne, Md./Pocomoke). The Tribe regained the lead 1:24 later when Pippin Saunders tapped the ball to Esty Byrd, who pulled George out of the cage and fired into the left corner.
