JMU Puts Six on All-CAA Men’s Soccer Teams

RICHMOND, Va. – Six members of the James Madison men's soccer team have been named All-Colonial Athletic Association performers for their outstanding seasons this year, as announced by the league office Wednesday night.
Junior defender Bjarki Aðalsteinsson (Kópavogur, Iceland/Menntaskólinn í Kópavogi) led the way for the Dukes by being selected First Team All-CAA. Senior forward Josh Grant (Plymouth, England/Torpoint College) was named a Second Team All-CAA performer while senior midfielder Jonathan Barden (Harrow, England/Park) and redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper Kyle Morton (Westchester, Pa./Reed Henderson) were both named Third Team All-CAA. In his first full season with JMU, redshirt-freshmen defender Toby Appleton (Cheshire, England) was named to the CAA All-Rookie Team and senior forward Jamal Umar (Herndon, Va./Chantilly) was acknowledged for his academic achievements by being named to the CAA All-Academic Team.
Aðalsteinsson's honor marks the second time he's been named a First Team All-CAA performer in this three years at JMU, as he also earned the honor as a freshman in 2012 while being named to the All-Rookie Team. Last season, Aðalsteinsson was named Second Team All-CAA. This season, Aðalsteinsson was one of three team captains and helped anchored the defense that has recorded seven shutouts this season, including last time out in a 2-0 win against Hofstra in the CAA Tournament Quarterfinals. Aðalsteinsson was named CAA Player of the Week on Oct. 13 after helping the Dukes to a 1-0-1 week against the conference's two ranked teams at the time, Delaware and UNCW. In the contests, he was matched up against the CAA's two leading scorers in Delaware's Guillermo Delgado, who was named conference Player of the Year, and UNCW's Jamie Dell. Neither player was able to find the back of the net against the Dukes.
Grant's Second Team All-CAA nod marks back-to-back seasons in which he has been named to the team after being a member of the All-Rookie Team in 2012. This season, Grant has started all 19 games the Dukes have played, is tied for the team lead in goals with four and is tied with redshirt-sophomore forward Connor Coward's (Centreville, Va./Centreville) team-high mark of 12 points. He scored the game-winning goal in Saturday's 2-0 win over Hofstra in the CAA Quarterfinals. Overall, Grant has scored 17 goals in three seasons for the Dukes.
Morton's Third Team All-CAA selection comes at the conclusion of a season in which he set career highs in nearly every category after starting all 19 games and playing every minute in goal this season for JMU. His seven shutouts are second-best in the CAA behind Elon goalkeeper Nathan Dean, who was named a Second Team performer. This season, Morton has made 74 saves, posting a .771 save percentage. With just 22 goals allowed this year, he's allowing just over one goal per game at 1.08.
Barden had an explosive senior year in the central midfield role for James Madison to fuel his Third Team All-CAA run. Taking six shots on goal this season, Barden put half of his attempts in the back of the net in scoring three goals to double his career total at JMU. Starting all 19 games this season, Barden scored both goals JMU put on the board in the CAA Tournament-clinching game on Oct. 29 against in-state rival William & Mary, a 2-0 victory for the Dukes. His eight points to date are good for third on the team behind Grant and Coward.
After redshirting his first season with the Dukes in 2013, Appleton jumped onto the scene in 2014 as an attacking defender that helped JMU post seven shutouts while scoring two goals himself on the year that helped him to be named to the All-Rookie Team. Scoring the first two goals of his career, Appleton got on the scoreboard in back-to-back games in nonconference action with goals against Robert Morris and West Virginia. On the defensive side of the ball, Appleton helped fuel a defense that held opponents to just 1.16 goals per game, which was good for fourth in the conference.
Bursting onto the scene in his final year at JMU, Umar scored his first three collegiate goals and was a big part of the offensive attack for the Dukes. Combined with his academic success in being named a JMU Athletic Director Scholar-Athlete twice and earning the CAA Commissioner's Academic Award once, Umar, a Computer Information Systems major, was named to the CAA All-Academic team this season.
The Dukes continue their postseason run Friday afternoon, Nov. 14, in Newark, Delaware, when they take on second-seeded UNCW. The winner of Friday's match will take on the winner of No. 1 Delaware and No. 5 Northeastern in the CAA Finals on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 16, at 1 p.m. The game will be televised on American Sports Network.
