On Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m., the James Madison men's soccer team will take on Delaware in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Finals looking to earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Â
Points of Interest-Sunday's matchup with Delaware is the 21st all-time between the programs with JMU holding a convincing 12-4-4 advantage.
-Earlier this season, James Madison topped then-No. 21 Delaware 1-0 on the road in Newark to open the CAA slate. In the match, freshman forward
Joe Vyner (Bath, Somerset, England/Beeches Cliff School) scored in the 83rd minute to lift the Dukes over the Blue Hens.
-In the only CAA Tournament meeting between the two sides, the Blue Hens came away victorious in the 2011 semifinals in Harrisonburg on penalty kicks after the two teams battled to a 2-2 draw through double overtime.
-JMU is the first No. 6 seed to reach the CAA Tournament Finals since 1993 when Old Dominion made it to the championship. Fifth-seeded William & Mary in 1999 and fifth-seeded Hofstra in 2004 are the two lowest seeds to ever win the CAA Tournament.
-Sunday's game is the eighth time JMU has reached the CAA Finals with the Dukes winning four conference titles (1992-94, 2001). On the flip side, Delaware has made just one previous trip to the CAA Finals. It came back in 2011 when the Blue Hens won the conference in Harrisonburg.
-Going as far as it can go in the CAA Tournament, JMU will have taken on the top three teams in the conference in No. 3 Hofstra in the quarterfinals, No. 2 UNCW in the semifinals and No. 1 Delaware in the finals. Each of the three teams finished in a three-way tie for first place during the regular season after going 5-2-1 through the year.
