HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The James Madison field hockey team used two first-half goals to propel itself to a 2-1 win at Hofstra and a berth in the 2014 Colonial Athletic Association Championship Tournament (Nov. 7 & 9) as the No. 4 seed.
The Dukes (11-7, 3-3 CAA) will travel to either Boston, Massachusetts, or Williamsburg, Virginia, for the CAA Tournament to take on the No. 1 seed, which could be either Northeastern or William and Mary. Sunday's match-up between the Huskies and Tribe for the overall top seed was postponed due to inclement weather. The Pride (12-7, 3-3) will not appear in the tournament due to JMU holding the head-to-head tiebreaker.
JMU put the first tally on the board when junior back Loes Stijntjes (Steenokkerzeel, Belgium/Heilig Hartcollege) scored from the top of the circle off a corner shot from junior midfielder Adrienne le Vatte (Port Elizabeth, South Africa/Alexander Road) and senior back Dana Allaband (Elkton, Md./Rising Sun) at the 8:44 mark of play. Allaband's assist gives her 28 for her career, which is tied for seventh all-time at JMU with Heather Hoehlein (1992-95).
Junior forward Danni Wilson (Port Elizabeth, South Africa/Collegiate) posted the eventual game-winner in the 26th minute of play off a pass from junior midfielder Saskia Chelmowski (Berlin, Germany/Gustav-Heinemann Oberschule).
The Pride cut the lead in half with less than a minute to play in the second half when Stella Schoen redirected a rebound into the cage off a penalty corner, but the Dukes settled in after a called timeout and held on for the victory.
Hofstra held a 15-12 shot advantage, including a 10-4 advantage in the second stanza, as well as an 8-5 edge in shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Hannah George (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) made six saves for the Dukes and allowed just one goal over a full 70 minutes of action to earn her eighth victory of the season (8-6). Carys Swan was tabbed with the loss (12-6) after making three saves and allowing two goals over 61:69 in the cage.
The Dukes were edged slightly in penalty corners, 4-3.Â
Northeastern and William and Mary are tentatively scheduled to play for the No. 1 seed on Monday, Nov. 3, at 11 a.m. JMU will face the winner in the semifinals of the CAA Championship Tournament.
