HARRISONBURG, Va. – In the team's final tune-up prior to the regular season, the James Madison women's basketball team created plenty of production in all aspects of the game en route to an 84-39 exhibition win against Division II's Lenoir-Rhyne on Sunday afternoon at the JMU Convocation Center.
The Dukes used big scoring runs early in the first half and stout defense to open up a 48-15 lead at the half. The reigning Colonial Athletic Association regular-season and tournament champions also outscored the Bears 36-24 over the final 20 minutes, utilizing reserve players for the latter part of the contest.
"It's very important for us to put the uniforms on, have the pep band and cheerleaders here and see the faithful fans come out to see how the new-look Dukes are going to look and fare," Head Coach
Kenny Brooks said. "It was good to watch kids rotate in and out and try to get in a rhythm."
He continued, "I thought it was a good start. Lenoir-Rhyne is very scrappy and they played against N.C. State on Friday night in what was a two-point game at halftime. I don't know if you use that as a measuring stick but we did some good things and have things to work on but we have film and can critique it to prepare for UCLA.
JMU opens the 2014-15 campaign on Friday, Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. when it faces 23rd-ranked UCLA at the Convocation Center.
