HARRISONBURG, Va., March 22, 2014 – Beth Glaros scored four goals to lead unbeaten and second-ranked Maryland to a 13-10 win over James Madison in a non-conference lacrosse game Saturday at University Park.
The Dukes dropped to 4-5 overall on the season, while the Terrapins kept their perfect record intact at 11-0.
With JMU leading 3-2 midway through the first half, Maryland pulled away with a 5-0 run that spanned the end of the opening half and the beginning of the second. Two of the goals came in the closing moments of the first half as Kelly Mcpartland scored with 38 seconds left, and Erin Collins tacked on another score with just six seconds left on the clock.
Senior Amy Roguski (Sykesville, Md./Liberty) paced the Dukes with three goals and an assist. Redshirt freshman Betsy Angel (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) contributed three points with her two goals and one assist. Junior Stephanie Finley (Media, Pa./Sacred Heart) and sophomore Jaci Gordon (Groton, Mass./Lawrence Academy) scored two goals apiece, while junior Ali Curwin chipped in with two assists.
In addition to Glaros, the Terrapins received a big game from McPartland with three goals and three assists. Collins and Zoe Stukenberg scored two goals apiece.
Trailing 10-5, JMU went on a 3-0 run midway through the second half to narrow the gap to 10-8. Angel scored back-to-back goals, including a highlight reel, behind-the-back goal, and Finley scored the third goal, her 20th of the season. The Terrapins scored to go up 11-8 before Roguski scored to make it 11-9, but that's as close as the Dukes would get.
The teams traded goals twice to open the game at 2-2, before the Dukes took their lone lead of the game on Finley's unassisted score with 19:35 remaining in the first half. The 3-2 lead was short-lived as the Terrapins went on their game-changing run.
Abbey Clipp made five saves in goal to up her record to a perfect 10-0. The Dukes' Schylar Healy (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) stopped 12 shots, but fell to 4-5 with the loss.
Five of JMU's nine games have been against nationally-ranked opponents this season. The Dukes are 2-3 in those games, with wins against Loyola (Md.) and Penn State, and losses to Florida, Virginia and Maryland.
The Dukes return to action Wednesday against Richmond. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. at University Park.
