On January 27, Dr. Nicole Detling will join James Madison student-athletes, coaches and staff as the 2015 McMillin Sport Psychology Forum Speaker. From 7-8:15 p.m. in Memorial Hall, Dr. Detling will share her sports psychology expertise and explain her motto, "Embrace the Suck! But don't get stuck in the suck." Attendees can expect to learn about dealing with struggles, slumps and the daily grind of competitive sport.

As a three-sport athlete at Ohio Wesleyan, Dr. Detling learned the pressures of competing at the collegiate level. Since then, Dr. Detling has worked with a variety of sports organizations including: US Speed Skating, the US Ski and Snowboard Association, the PGA, MLB, MLS, and NHL as well as professional cyclists, mountain bikers and rock climbers.

Dr. Nicole Detling received her Bachelor of Arts in psychology and sports science from Ohio Wesleyan University, her Master of Science in sport psychology from Ithaca College and her doctorate in sport psychology at the University of Utah. Dr. Detling currently resides in Salt Lake City, Utah, where she works for HeadStrong Consulting and serves as an assistant professor in the exercise and sports sciences department at the University of Utah.

The annual McMillin Sport Psychology Forum is made possible through an endowment provided by Joe Showker, who expressed a desire to expose JMU student-athletes to the knowledge and experiences of leaders in the sport psychology field.
