NEWARK, Del. – With 2:42 remaining in the first overtime period, redshirt senior Taylor West tipped the game-winning goal into the left corner of the cage and pushed No.19 James Madison field hockey to a 2-1 win at No. 13 Delaware on Sunday afternoon. The Dukes improved to 2-0 in Colonial Athletic Association action and 8-3 overall while the Blue Hens dropped to 1-1 in league play and 10-2 overall.
With just under three minutes left in the first overtime, sophomore Hannah Hall picked up the ball at midfield and drove down to the JMU attacking circle with a 3-on-1 advantage against the UD keeper. Hall drew Blue Hens' Emmeline Oltmans out of the goal and rocketed the ball in from the top of the circle. Her attempt deflected off the keeper's pads and straight into the waiting stick of West, who put the ball away for the win in a rematch of the 2014 CAA Championship game.
JMU held a 4-0 shot advantage in the overtime stanza despite trailing Delaware 11-4 in shots during regulation. Madison's keeper Sara Kraeutler made three saves over the first 70 minutes of play.
This is the second win for the Dukes over a ranked opponent this season and first over a top-15 program. JMU will face two more ranked foes during the regular season, both currently residing in the top five (Oct. 18 vs. #5 Duke, Oct. 30 vs. #4 Virginia).
QUOTING COACH MORGAN

We know that we have to work hard, and each individual on this team is willing to do the work. It makes for an awesome culture."
