RICHMOND, Va. – Five James Madison men's soccer players were recognized for their outstanding play during the 2015 season as they were named to All-Colonial Athletic Association teams, the league announced Thursday evening.
Redshirt sophomore defender Toby Appleton and redshirt freshman midfielder Billy Metzler earned spots on the All-CAA Second Team with Metzler also making the All-Rookie Team. Senior defender Bjarki Aðalsteinsson and junior goalkeeper Kyle Morton were selected to the All-CAA Third Team while senior defender Daniel Roppert was honored on the All-Academic Team.
After earning a starting spot and CAA All-Rookie honors as a redshirt freshman in 2014, Appleton displayed excellent skill on both ends of the field this season. The Cheshire, England, native started all 18 games for the Dukes so far this season, accumulating 1,597 minutes. He has set single-season career highs with three goals, two assists and eight points, surpassing his five-point season (2-1—5) he had a year ago.
Metzler has been a revelation for JMU after redshirting his first year with the team in 2014. The winger has registered two goals and four assists for eight total points. His 26 shots rank tied for third for the Dukes through 18 games, 17 of which he started, for a total of 1,197 minutes. The Fairfax, Va., native is the first Duke to make an All-CAA team and the All-Rookie team since Aðalsteinsson was named First Team All-CAA and All-Rookie in 2012.
Aðalsteinsson completes his career having made an All-CAA team all four years at JMU. He earned First Team All-CAA honors as a freshman and junior and Second Team honors as a sophomore. The captain has started on the back line every game this season, tallying a goal in the Dukes' 3-1 victory over William & Mary. The Kópavogur, Iceland, native was selected as a preseason All-CAA member prior to the 2015 season.
Also serving as a preseason All-CAA selection this year, Morton has started all 17 games he has played in. The goalkeeper has collected 60 saves out of 81 faced on goal for a .741 save percentage. He has a 1.23 goals against average in his 1,533 minutes on the pitch and produced four shutouts, bringing his four-year total to 15 shutouts.
Impressing both on the field and in the classroom, Roppert earned his way onto the All-Academic team. The Munich, Germany, native was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team thanks to a 3.88 grade point average as a management and computer information systems double-major. He also tallied an assist in 987 minutes of action this season. He has appeared in 12 games, 11 of which he started.
Hofstra's Joseph Holland was named CAA Player of the Year, Elon's Nathan Diehl was named CAA Defender of the Year, Marcel Berry (William & Mary) and Ben Fisher (UNCW) earned CAA Co-Rookies of the Year and Richard Nuttall of Hofstra was tabbed CAA Coach of the Year.
The fifth-seeded Dukes continue postseason play on Friday, Nov. 13 when they travel to Hempstead, N.Y., for a CAA semifinal match against top-seeded Hofstra at 7 p.m. The Dukes defeated Hofstra 2-0 in the CAA quarterfinals last season en route to winning the conference championship.
