HAMPTON, Va. – James Madison women's basketball overcame a 14-point deficit to force overtime and secure a 68-56 victory at Hampton on Sunday evening.
With JMU trailing 47-33 and eight minutes left in regulation, the Dukes slowly chipped away at the Lady Pirates to pull within five (51-46) at the 1:31 mark. After a series of defensive stops, redshirt senior guard Jazmon Gwathmeyused a pair of jumpers to pull within one. JMU sent Hampton to the line twice, but the Lady Pirates sank just one of four attempts.
Regaining possession, the Dukes drove the length of the court where senior guard Ashley Perezrolled the game-tying bucket in with seven seconds left on the clock. JMU's defense forced Hampton to take an off-balance shot as the buzzer sounded, sending the game to overtime.
Madison outscored Hampton 16-4 in extra time, keeping the Lady Pirates from sinking a field goal over the final five minutes of competition. Perez finished with a game-high 22 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter and five in overtime.
This marks JMU's 20th double-digit comeback victory under Head Coach Kenny Brooks and fifth settled in overtime. The 14-point deficit is tied for the fourth-largest deficit erased for a victory in the Brooks era.
