COLLEGE PARK, Maryland – The No. 15 James Madison lacrosse team fell behind early but its second-half rally came up short in a 14-10 loss at No. 1 Maryland, March 21. With the loss, the Dukes dropped to 7-3 while the top-ranked Terrapins improved to 9-0.
Senior attacker Stephanie Finley led JMU with four goals on six shots, while redshirt-sophomore attacker Betsy Angel had three scores on three shots. Senior goalkeeper Schylar Healy had 12 saves on the match for Madison.
Zoe Stukenberg led Maryland with four goals, while Megan Whittle tallied three goals. Taylor Cummings was effective on the draw controls, posting a game-high 11 for UM. Alex Fitzpatrick picked up the win for the Terrapins, giving up just four goals and making five saves in 41:24 of action.
Madison got on the board first as Finley scored on a free position shot just over three minutes into the game. Maryland then scored 10 of the next 11 goals in the game, including seven straight over a 12-minute period spanning the end of the first half and the start of the second half to go up 10-2 with 28:09 to play in the game.
JMU snapped the surge on junior midfielder Jaci Gordon's free position goal with just under 25 minutes to play before Maryland scored three consecutive goals in less than 90 seconds to push to its largest lead of the match at 13-3. From there, the Dukes got on a roll as they scored the next five goals in a row, including a pair from Finley, to trim the lead to 13-8 with 11:37 to play. UM scored one more on Brooke Griffin's free position goal with just under nine minutes left before back-to-back goals from dAngel and Finley cut it to 14-10 with 2:21 to play, but that would be the end of the scoring for the match.
JMU was outshot 33-21 in the match, while Maryland also held a decisive 19-7 advantage in draw controls, including 10-1 in the first half. The Dukes were also challenged in clearing the zone, as they were just 12-of-18 while the Terps were 9-of-11.
Madison returns to action Wednesday, March 25 hosting in-state rival Liberty at University Park at 7 p.m. Admission to the match is free.
