HARRISONBURG, Virginia - No. 19 James Madison held Towson scoreless for 40 minutes of the match to take control and earn a 15-9 victory in Colonial Athletic Association play, April 17. With the victory, the Dukes improved to 11-4 and 3-1 in the CAA, while the Tigers fell to 7-7 and 2-3 in league action.
After Towson scored the first two goals of the game in 1:31, the Dukes' defense dominated play, led by senior goalkeeper Schylar Healy's 10 saves. The offense also clicked off the final six goals of the half to give Madison a 6-2 advantage at the intermission.
JMU then made it a total of 12 unanswered goals by scoring the first six goals of the final period to go up 12-2 with 20:59 to play. Towson snapped the 40-minute drought with a goal by Andi Raymond with 18:16 to go, but JMU answered with three of the next four goals to lead 15-4 with 5:07 remaining in the contest. From there, Towson scored the final five goals with game already out of reach.
Madison outshot Towson 28-26 and forced the visiting Tigers into 12 turnovers as compared to JMU's seven. The Dukes controlled the ground balls 15-6, including a 12-4 advantage in the first half.
Three Dukes -- senior attacker Stephanie Finley, senior midfielder Alison Curwin and junior midfielder Taylor Gress - had three goals each in the win. Redshirt-sophomore attacker Betsy Angel had a game-high three assists. Healy's 10 saves marked the sixth time this season that the keeper has made 10 or more stops in a game, as she now has 124 saves this season and 473 in her career.
Towson was paced by Raymond's four goals, with three coming after the game was decided. Goalie Kelsea Donnelly gave up 13 goals and had just five saves in just under 58 minutes of action.
Madison will wrap up the two-game homestand with its final contest at University Park this year, when it hosts Delaware on Sunday, April 19 at 1 p.m. Prior to the game, the Dukes will recognize their 2015 seniors seeing their final regular season action at home.
