GOODYEAR, Ariz. - The 2016 Loyola Intercollegiate came to a close with the James Madison men's golf team finishing in third place at the Par 72, 7,015-yard Palm Valley Golf Course on Tuesday.Making a strong first impression with the Dukes was sophomore Matt Cowgill, finished tied for fourth at nine-under par in his first tournament since transferring into the program. He was one of three Dukes to compete as an individual, so his score did not count towards the team score.
Junior Ryan Cole led the team scoring from wire-to-wire, finishing at seven-under par to place 10th individually after sinking six more birdies in the third round. Freshman Alex Henderson (-3, T-13th) also turned in a top-15 performance in the tournament.
Entering the day in second as a team and just two strokes behind Arkansas State, the Dukes started with a bang as junior Poom Pattaropong (-1, T-23rd) eagle d the par-5 fifth hole. He also birdied two of his final three holes to finish strong on the day.
Sophomore Jack Floydd (E, T-26th) balancedthings out with an even-par 72 in the third round and redshirt freshman Shota Ozaki rounded out the Dukes' efforts with his tournament-best 70 on Tuesday after carding a 76 on Sunday and a 73 on Monday.
Arkansas State created separation from the field of 17 teams to take the top spot. The Red Wolves' Tanner Napier (-18, 1st) was stellar all three days of the tournament to take the individual crown, highlighted by an eight-under 64 on the final day.
Also playing as individuals for JMU were redshirt junior Connor Walters (+6, T-61st) and senior Chris Kapsak (+13, T-86th).
Overall, this tournament marks the Dukes' fifth top-3 finish in six tournaments during the 2015-16 campaign. They return to the course on Monday, March 7 for the start of the 35th Annual Bash at the Beach Invitational in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.
