Seniors Power Dukes to 20-8 Victory over Hofstra in Final Home Game

HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison sent its seniors out with a win in their final home game as the Dukes rolled to a 20-8 Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse victory against Hofstra on Sunday afternoon at University Park.

Four seniors recorded at least three goals as the Dukes evened their record to 7-7 overall and stayed unbeaten in CAA play, at 3-0, while the Pride dropped to 3-8 and 1-1. The 12-goal win was the largest for JMU ever against Hofstra and its 20 goals was the most scored by either team in the 21-game series.

Senior midfielder Brooks Lawler scored a career-high four goals and added an assist for five points, also a career high. Senior attacker Betsy Angel became the 19th player to record 100 career goals at JMU as she matched Lawler with four goals. Angel now sits at 102 goals with three games to play. Senior midfielder Jaci Gordon joined Angel on the 100-goal list as her three scores made her the 20th player to reach the feat. She also added an assist for a four-point afternoon.
Junior attacker Margaret Tucker Fogarty had three goals and one assist while senior midfielder Taylor Gress notched three goals. Fogarty's three goals and four points were both career highs. Junior attacker Cristina McCarthy also had three points off two scores and one helper.

JMU outshot Hofstra 31-18, including 21-9 in the first half, and held a 22-15 advantage in shots on goal. JMU goalkeepers accounted for seven saves as freshman Ellie Harmeyer made three stops in the first half and redshirt sophomore Kaitlin Martindale made four saves during the second half. JMU edged HU 16-14 in draw controls and had 19 ground balls, to Hofstra's 12.

Senior defender Carter Reifsnider corralled a career-best four ground balls while causing two turnovers, tying her career high. Sophomore midfielder Haley Warden had her second straight game with five draw controls while Gress tied her career high of four.

Hofstra was paced by the CAA's leading scorer, Lindsay Scott, who had a game-best six goals, while Lexi Lenaghan had three points off a goal and two assists.

The Pride jumped out to an early 3-2 lead but JMU answered with a 7-1 run, sparked by back-to-back goals from Lawler, to take a 9-4 lead with 7:41 remaining in the half. Angel capped off the surge with two goals, with her latter being the 100th of her career. The Dukes led 13-6 at the break.

HU scored 42 seconds into the second half to make it a six-goal game but it would be the last goal for the Pride for nearly 26 minutes as the Dukes piled on six straight scores, two coming from both Gordon and Fogarty.

Betsy Angel's second of four goals today was her 100th career goal as the senior became the 19th player ever to score 100 goals at JMU. She now sits 18th all-time with 102 career scores, passing Jess Marion (1997-00), who had 100 goals. She also ranks tied for 18th in assists (42) and 18th in points (146).

Shortly after Angel scored her 100th goal, Jaci Gordon netted her third goal of the day for the 100th of her career. She became the 20th player to achieve 100 goals at JMU and is at 100, which is tied with former Duke Jess Marion. Tied for 19th all-time at JMU in career goals, Gordon is also tied for 18th in assists (42) and 19th in points (142).

MOST DOMINANT WIN ON HOFSTRA
For the second time in three games, JMU has notched the biggest win in the series against an opponent. The Dukes beat Hofstra by 12, besting the previous record of a 10-goal win in a 17-7 decision on April 20, 2014 – the last time these two met in Harrisonburg. JMU's 20 goals were also the most by either team in the 21-game series.
