JMU Shuts Out Drexel in Saturday Showdown

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – No. 7 James Madison shut out Drexel 3-0 in game one and 8-0 in game two at the Drexel Softball Field in Philadelphia, Pa. Saturday afternoon. The Dukes improved to 36-3 (11-0 CAA) while the Dragons fell to 16-24 (0-10 CAA).

Sophomore Megan Good (22-2) tossed a shutout in game one, allowing only two hits while striking out 12. Senior Jailyn Ford (14-1) picked up the win in game two with 11 strikeouts in six complete innings of work.

Sophomore infielder Morgan Tolle led the Dukes with three hits in the first game while senior catcher Erica Field went 3-for-4 in game two.

In the first game, Ford hit an RBI single to the left side scoring Tolle from third in the first inning. The Dukes added another run in the third off a single through the left side from junior Niki Prince, scoring Good, who had reached on a fielder's choice.

James Madison tacked on the final run of the game in the fourth inning with a rally started by a single to right field by junior infielder Madyson Moran. With one out, Tolle singled up the middle, moving Moran to third. Tolle then got caught stealing second, allowing Moran to take home on throw.

The Dukes recorded four straight three-up, three-down innings for the final 12 outs of the game.

In game two, JMU took a 1-0 lead with a steal from redshirt freshman Kassie Brammer, allowing Prince to score from third.

Field led off the seven-run seventh inning with a single up the middle. Junior Casie Hill scored off a bases loaded walk from Prince before Moran hit a two RBI single to right-center. Senior Hannah Hayes and Ford picked up RBIs off a single and walk, respectively, making it 8-0.

Redshirt freshman Jessica McCabe went to the mound in the seventh, where she struck out two and added a ground out to close the game.

UP NEXT
The Dukes return to the Drexel Softball Field tomorrow morning for the final game of the series against the Dragons. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m.

NOTEWORTHY NUMBERS
Tolle went 3-for-3 with one run scored in game one against the Dragons. She moved her career-total to 98 hits, just two away from joining the 100-hit club.

CAREER CHARTS
Good tossed her seventh shutout of the season in the 3-0 win over Drexel, pushing her career total to 13.

With four walks on the day, Ford set the single-season record for walks with 35. She broke the previous record of 34, which she set as a sophomore in 2014.

Field is currently tied for first on the JMU all-time at-bats chart with 707 alongside Katie Georgia (2004-07).
