HARRISONBURG, Va. - Richmond scored in six of eight innings on Tuesday night to hand James Madison a 17-5 loss in a rain-shortened non-conference contest at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park.
Â
The Dukes fell to 18-27 in the loss, their third straight midweek defeat, while Richmond improved to 26-20 on the year. The contest, which was delayed for 12 minutes in the seventh inning due to heavy precipitation, was called just prior to the start of the ninth when heavy rain returned to the area.
Â
Sophomore second baseman
Kyle McPherson went 2-for-4 with a double for the Dukes, while senior shortstop
Chad Carroll drove in three runs with a bases-clearing double of his own in the second inning.
Â
JMU did all of its damage in the five-run second, with Carroll's shot to right-center plating the final three runs after sophomore center fielder
Mike Sciorra walked with the bases loaded and junior left fielder
Ky Parrott was hit by the very next pitch.
Â
Four Spiders collected multiple hits in the contest, paced by five from shortstop Tyler Beckwith, while Kurtis Brown, Doug Graeger and Brandon Johnson all notched a homer on the evening. Zach Moore picked up his first win, yielding just one hit across 3 1/3 innings of relief.
Â
The Dukes used a season-high 10 pitchers following their nine-day layoff, having not played since a May 1 bout against Elon.
Â
QUOTING COACH IKENBERRY
"We're still figuring out how best to compete in midweek games. We didn't pitch very well or play great defense and, when you don't do either of those things, it's tough to stay in a game. We're glad to have gotten this out of the way, coming off a nine-day break, and we're looking forward to a big conference series this weekend against UNCW."
Â
UP NEXT
The Dukes will continue their Colonial Athletic Association slate this weekend when they welcome league-leading UNCW to Harrisonburg for a three game set at Eagle Field. The Seahawks are 33-13 (13-3 CAA) this season and have a midweek bout against North Carolina on Wednesday evening.
Â
MadiZone HD SportsNet presented by the JMU Alumni Association will provide live coverage of all three contests over the weekend.
